Almshouses in Richmond: History, Heritage and Community
March 27 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Our speaker, Juliet Ames-Lewis, Chief Executive of The Richmond Charities, looks back over 400 years at how Richmond has helped and supported elderly residents of the borough in need of housing. The first were Queen Elizabeth’s Almshouses, built in 1600 to house eight poor aged women; they were originally located in Petersham Road, and later rebuilt in The Vineyard. From then on, wealthy benefactors of many backgrounds endowed land and property for the building of our local almshouses. The Richmond Charities now owns them, and runs 162 almshouses spread over 14 estates in Richmond, Twickenham, and Mortlake.
The meeting will be at Queen Charlotte Hall, Richmond & Hillcroft Adult Community College, Parkshot, Richmond TW9 2RD on Thursday 27 March at 7:30pm. Doors open at 7:00pm with wine and soft drinks available. Free for Richmond Society members in person or online.
Members will be e-mailed a Microsoft Teams link shortly before the meeting should they wish to join online. Non-members can attend in person for £7. Get your tickets on Eventbrite.
